Abstract: The idea of connecting people with computational technologies can be traced back to the earliest idea of modern computers, which was envisioned in Vannevar Bush’s seminal article, “As We May Think” (1945). Setting out to describe a machine that externalizes and augments human cognition, particularly among scientists, Bush well recognized the critical role of collaboration in advancing human knowledge. From the beginning, the ideas of supporting cooperative work through computational facilities have been embedded in the concept of Memex. Since then, the scope of social computing has expanded so widely that almost all branches of social and computing research feel its impact. Social computing technologies have revolutionized socialization practices in modern societies and deeply affect how people make sense of the surrounding world by surrounding individuals with an information space, which is continually refined by social interactions.
